Icelandic Curb Bit - Additional Information
A curb bit can help experienced riders to get the best out of well-trained horses that have learned to work in good self-carriage under the rider. Shank bits use lever action and pressure on the reins additionally affects the poll and chin of the horse what can be beneficial for best performance.
The Icelandic bit is a special bit because it is not only a leverage bit, but also functions as a normal bit, when used correctly. If the equipment is adjusted in a proper way, the angle of the shanks will change when the horse is round and the contact from the rider’s hand to the horse’s mouth will become rather straight. Then the effect of the chain will not apply. But if the horse stiffens the poll and raises the neck too much, the effect of the chain will apply and encourage the horse to become more round again.
Bit guards can help to protect the corners of the mouth from injuries due to pinching and avoids that the hook for the curb chain chafes sensitive skin around the horse’s mouth. Please keep in mind that bit guards might make your bit narrower.
This bit conforms to FEIF rules and meets international requirements. Therefore, it is allowed in FEIF sport and breeding events. (Please be aware that some national associations might have special rules concerning certain age classes)
